Lessons & Assignments Tuesday, January 31st

Math - None - We reviewed improper fractions and mixed numbers today.  Students shaded models of both, and converted models to both improper fractions and mixed numbers.  We also completed an in-class scavenger hunt to practice converting them.

Science - None - We reviewed sedimentary rock today, and watched a Study Jams slide show.  We started our next lesson on the rock cycle, and watched the lab podcast in class.  We also looked at a few samples from our rock kit today.

Language Arts - None - We summarized our unit's essential question today using text evidence from the 3 texts we have read.  We worked in small groups to read informational articles on spiders while identifying the main idea and details.  Independent groups reviewed grammar skills on the IXL app.

Social Studies - None - We did not have social studies today.

Lessons & Assignments Monday, January 30th

Math - 7.7 - We learned how to add and subtract mixed numbers today.  In small groups, we worked with fraction circle models to represent mixed numbers.

Science - None - Last week the class read about minerals and the 3 types of rocks.  We reviewed this a bit today, and watched a few Study Jams slide shows, as well as a Discovery Education video on minerals.

Language Arts - None - We read a trickster tale today about Anansi the spider.  We compared the spider in the trickster tale to the spiders we've been reading about in our expository text.  We did a spelling word sort, reviewed our grammar words, and completed sentence stems to review our vocabulary words.

Social Studies - None - We worked on our daily geography packets today, and spent the rest of the time using our "free ipad time" incentive from our classroom team bucks!

Classroom Visitor

Eli's dad visited our classroom today to tell us about his job at Lyondell in Clinton.  We got to see pictures of the trains that come through, hear about the types of plastics they make, and see the safety equipment he wears at work.  He even brought water bottles for every student!


Lessons & Assignments Friday, January 27th

Math - None - We completed lesson 7.6 today on renaming fractions with mixed numbers.

Science - None - We used our science time to keep working on our math lessons.

Language Arts - None - We used our language arts time for a classroom visitor, and some catching up on missing work time.

Social Studies - None - We did not have social studies today.

Lessons & Assignments Thursday, January 26th*

Math - None - We completed lesson 7.5 today, where we combined adding and subtracting fractions.

Science - None - We read about the three types of rocks today - metamorphic, igneous, and sedimentary.  We also did a rock/mineral fact scavenger hunt.

Language Arts - None - We finished reading our story about spiders today while practicing main idea & details and summarizing.  We added suffixes to words to sort multi-syllable words, reviewed possessive nouns and apostrophes, and wrote responses to the text we read.

Social Studies - None - We worked on our daily geography packets, and continued reading chapter 5.

Lessons & Assignments Wednesday, January 25th

Math - None - We finished lesson 7.4 today on subtracting fractions.  This seemed to be an easy lesson - hooray!

Science - None - We previewed chapter 7 today on the rock cycle.  We are making a move from life science to earth science with this unit.  We watched a Discovery Education video on rocks and minerals to preview the chapter.

Language Arts - None -  We spent the entire period doing a close reading of our selection story, Spiders.  We discussed elements of expository stories such as captions and photographs.  We practiced finding the main idea and details of each section, then wrote summaries with our small groups.

Social Studies - None - We did not have social studies today.

Lessons & Assignments Tuesday, January 24th

Math - Division practice - We used part of our math time today to catch up on all of the make-up work from having so many students sick.  We used the rest of the time reviewing long division.  When grading yesterday's assignment, I noticed that 70% of the class missed the long division spiral review question.  We needed to relearn how to do long division today to keep it fresh!

Science - None - We took our chapter 6 test today.

Language Arts - None - We used our graphic organizers on main idea & details that we created yesterday to write a summary today.  We discussed that summaries should be in our own words, should be short, and should contain only the most important details from the passage.  We also practiced vocabulary skills today.  We added different suffixes to our vocabulary words, then had to use each version in a sentence.  We also worked in groups to find words in our story that we could add suffixes to.  Students had to use the dictionary to help, and we discovered that finding words the "old fashioned" way was a bit tricky!  We also did some phonics practice, focusing on 3-letter blends.

Social Studies - None - We did not have social studies today.

Lessons & Assignments Monday, January 23rd

Math - 7.3 - We learned about adding fractions with models today.

Science - None - We read about energy pyramids today, and reviewed for tomorrow's test.

Language Arts - None - We discussed prefixes today, and worked in small groups to hunt for prefixes in our close reading selection this week.  We shared our discoveries with the class and talked about the definitions of the words we found.  We also practiced working with plural possessive nouns.  Students had to list plural nouns that they found around the classroom, and their partners had to make the noun possessive and use it in a sentence.  We did a repeated reading of our close reading passage, and talked about finding the main idea and details of a section using graphic organizers.

Social Studies - Louisiana Purchase worksheet - We started a new daily geography packet today covering projections maps.  We reviewed the Louisiana Purchase by adding details to our note taking foldable in our journals.  Students had some class time to work on a LP worksheet, but need to finish it for homework if they were unable to get it done in class.

Lessons & Assignments Friday, January 20th

Math - None - We completed lesson 7.2 today on representing fractions as a sum.

Science - None - We used our science time to watch the Presidential Inauguration today.  Although this is more of a social studies topic, it was live during our science time.  I felt it was important for the students to witness, and we discussed lots of Presidential facts, such as the salary, 3 branches of government, and term limits.

Language Arts - None - We practiced writing to a source today, focusing on including an introduction, transition words, and sequence.  We also included possessive nouns in our writing.  We did a repeated reading of a text to build fluency, and practiced summarizing passages in small groups.

Social Studies - None - We did not have social studies today.

Lessons & Assignments Thursday, January 19th

Math - None - We completed lesson 7.1 today.  We learned about adding fractions using models.

Science - None - We continued learning about food webs today.  We added on to our food chains from earlier this week, and changed them into food webs.  We also completed a food web worksheet.

Language Arts - None - We reviewed our vocabulary words by answering questions in writing using complete sentences.  We also talked about how-to writing.  We discussed the features of how-to writing, and read an expert example, identifying the features along the way.  Students worked in groups using Google Classroom to answer questions about the model text.

Social Studies - None - We finished watching a Discovery Education video on how the U.S. expanded westward.  We read about how Illinois became a territory, and read about the Louisiana Purchase.  We also finished up our weekly daily geography packet.

Food Chains Songs

Lessons & Assignments Wednesday, January 18th

Math - None - We reviewed our chapter 6 test today, and discussed the importance of reading through the directions and questions carefully.  We also learned the new vocabulary for chapter 7 as we previewed the chapter.

Science - None - We finished up our food chain songs today, and made food web diagrams for our science journals.

Language Arts - None - We reviewed our vocabulary words today in class using student generated questions from yesterday's lesson.  We practiced close reading skills and note taking, and started learning about possessive nouns.  We did a quick write on animal adaptations based on our reading passage, and did a few fun group activities to review grammar and spelling words.

Social Studies - None - We did not have social studies today.

Food Chains

We made food chains in our groups today, starting with a producer.  We will expand on these tomorrow by making them into food webs.


Lessons & Assignments Tuesday, January 17th

Math - None - We took our chapter 6 test today.

Science - None - We read about food chains and food webs.  The students worked in groups to create a food chain.  We will expand these into food webs tomorrow.

Language Arts - None - We started a new unit today.  This unit will look a little different than others we've done this year.  We are trying out a new reading series to see if we would like it.  Our tests over this story will be on Friday, February 3rd.  Today we did a quick write on how animals survive, and shared them with the class.  We also worked in groups to create concept webs on our ipads about animal adaptations.  Each group projected their work, and explained their web.  I read aloud a story about animal adaptations, and the students practiced summarizing the story using a think-aloud cloud on their ipads.  We also introduced our new vocabulary words, and the students worked in groups to come up with review questions for a few of the words.

Social Studies - None - We did not have social studies today.

Classroom Visitor

Makailey's mom loves to bake, and even used to own a bakery.  Luckily for us, we got to try out her amazing cupcakes today, and learn how she bakes and decorates them.


Lessons & Assignments Friday, January 13th

Math - None - We are all finished with chapter 6, so we reviewed the chapter in class today.  We will take the chapter 6 test on Tuesday.

Science - None - We read about food chains today, and started a group project where we are creating food chain songs.

Language Arts - None - We took our unit assessments today.

Social Studies - None - We did not have social studies today.

Lessons & Assignments Thursday, January 12th

Math - 6.8 - We practiced comparing and ordering fractions today.  We made number lines with fractions in our small groups, then used them for today's lesson.  We also learned how to compare and order fractions by comparing to 1/2 as a benchmark, comparing common denominators, using common numerators, and using our fraction strips.  It's a lot of different methods, and I encouraged the kids to use the one that made the most sense to them.

Science - None - We previewed the vocabulary words for our next lesson, and made vocabulary foldables for our science journals.

Language Arts - None - We completed a spelling and grammar page in class today.  We practiced for tomorrow's test on Spelling City, and reread our weekly story.  Students also worked on a main idea and details graphic organizer about their ideal pet, then wrote clues about what their ideal pet would be.  Tomorrow we will share our writing and see if we used enough details for our classmates to guess.  We will also take our reading, spelling, and vocab tests tomorrow.

Social Studies - None - We worked on our daily geography packet.  We are learning about map coordinates.  We also watched a Discovery Education video on how the USA grew from the original 13 colonies to the 50 states we have today.

Lessons & Assignments Wednesday, January 11th

Math - 6.7 - We continued talking about comparing fractions today.  We discussed comparing fractions by converting them to common denominators, and by converting them to common numerators.  We also used fraction strips, and comparing to 1/2 benchmarks.

Science - None - We read about decomposers today.  We completed a producer, consumer, and decomposer worksheet in class, and watched a Discovery Education video about food chains and food webs.

Language Arts - None - We completed a spelling and grammar page in class today.  We reread our weekly story, and continued working on our ant research.  We had guided reading groups today, where we focused on comprehension.

Social Studies - None - We read about The Northwest Ordinance today, and worked on a foldable note taking activity for our journals.

Lessons & Assignments Tuesday, January 10th

Math - 6.6 - We took our midchapter quiz today, and completed lesson 6.6 on comparing fractions using benchmarks.  We used 1/2 as a benchmark to see if other fractions were greater than or less than 1/2.

Science - None - We had Ag in the Classroom today.

Language Arts - None - We completed a spelling and grammar page in class today.  We reread our weekly story about ants, and read a fable called The Ant and the Grasshopper.  We did a compare/contrast writing activity with the two stories.  We also worked in guided reading groups.  We reviewed our vocabulary words while previewing a story about butterflies and moths.

Social Studies - None - We did not have social studies today.

Lessons & Assignments Monday, January 9th

Math - None - We worked on problem solving by finding equivalent fractions today. This was a tricky lesson, so we did most of it together as a class.  The students did the 4 review questions for a grade today.

Science - Consumer packet - We finished our herbivore, carnivore, and omnivore Popplet project on the iPads today.  Students were also given a reading comprehension packet on these 3 types of consumers for homework.  Most students finished in class.  Those taking it home for homework do not have to complete the crossword puzzle on the back.

Language Arts - None - We completed a spelling and grammar page in class today.  We finished reading our weekly story about ants, and completed a graphic organizer.  We watched a Discovery Education video on ants, and students had to write down facts about ants as they watched.  We worked on adding details to our writing by solving mysteries about fairy tales.  Many students couldn't remember Jack and the Beanstalk, so we read an Epic book on the iPad to refresh our memories.

Social Studies - None - We completed our daily geography today on map coordinates.  We also started a foldable project for our upcoming lesson.

Math - None - We learned about common denominators today.

Science - None - We read about the 3 types of consumers today:  herbivores, carnivores, omnivores.  We started a Popplet project on the iPads as well.

Language Arts - None - We completed a spelling and grammar page in class today.  We also started reading our weekly story and worked on a graphic organizer.

Lessons & Assignments Thursday, January 5th

Math - 6.3 - We learned about reducing fractions to their simplest form today.  We used fraction strips, fraction circles, division, and common multiples to figure solve.  Most kids ended up preferring to use fraction strips.

Science - None - We started chapter 6 today on energy transfer in ecosystems.  In this chapter, we will learn about producers, consumers, and food chains.

Language Arts - None - We started a new unit today, and will take the test on Friday, January 13th.  We learned our new vocabulary words, watched our vocabulary slide show, and completed our vocabulary packets.  We also had some time to free read and visit the library.

Social Studies - vocab p. 27 - We started a new unit in social studies today.  We will be learning about how Illinois moved from a territory to a state.  The students need to complete the vocabulary preview page for homework tonight using their books.

Lessons & Assignments Wednesday, January 4th

Math - 6.2 - We completed lesson 6.2 today on generating equivalent fractions.  We used both fractions strips and multiplication for this lesson.  This was an extra challenge, because now that it's 2nd semester, I'm no longer allowing students to use multiplication charts.  Keep practicing those facts at home!

Science - None - We skipped science today to catch up on some housekeeping issues.  I conferenced with all students about their AR goals, and Mrs. Pratt pulled kids out for winter benchmark tests.

Language Arts - None - We used our LA time today to switch classroom librarians, switch locker partners, and take our Star Reading and Star Math assessments.

Social Studies - None - We did not have social studies today.
